Gilt-edged or Guilt-Edged!?

It is unusual to have the opportunity to write about an experience which one knows one is sharing with every human being on the planet! But “Pete’s Pandemic” is about a shared experience! What is the merit in writing about something which everybody else is experiencing? It is not for me to judge and compare my experiences to yours or that of others. Indeed, Irene and I realise how lucky we are to be retired, not bringing up school age children, comfortable financially. But, the other fact that we know is that everybody’s experience whilst being  different is also the same. We have all been variously stressed in our quarantines and isolations, worried by the possible consequences of our own actions and those of others, economically hit, experience starved, hardship hurt, travel restricted and, sadly, for some, grieving the loss of a loved one.

I sat down early in the crisis and decided that I was going to write something every day for a period of 100 days. Reflecting back on what was written by me from March to June of this year, I cannot view it as anything other than embarrassing self-indulgence. Yet I vowed if I was going to self-publish these scribbles then I was going to do so with the minimum of tampering; it was going to be a warts and all reflection of whom I was in the moment and what was impacting me at the time. So if I did tinker then I tried to do so by making the adjustments merely grammatical, and gently adjusting the verbiage so that the sense and content remained as it was. Therefore ‘Pete’s Pandemic’ is more guilt-edged than gilt-edged. But I do feel that I am thick-skinned enough to have the courage to present to the wider world that which may make me cringe in the cold light of morning.

I would feel very privileged if you were to buy my new book and very honoured if you take the time to read it. Even more, I would be so, so grateful if you would take a few moments to write a review of the book.

At this time of trouble I wish you all a safe and calm holiday. I hope that you are all able to enter the new year very close to being vaccinated and soon able to make local and international journeys and, most of all, have some fun.

Happy 2021 one and all. Peter Davidson
